Conditional and hypothetical sentences refer to statements like “If ~, then…”. In Vietnamese, there are several ways to express conditions and hypotheses. We will introduce the most commonly used sentence structures.
Sentence Structures for Conditions and Hypotheses
Nếu ~ thì ~ (= If ~, then ~)
Structure:
The following usage is also acceptable:
* Subject 1 and Subject 2 can be the same person.
Example Sentences:
① Nếu trời mưa thì trận đấu sẽ được dời lại đến tuần sau.
If it rains, the match will be postponed until next week.
② Nếu tôi có nhiều tiền thì tôi sẽ mua nhà.
If I have a lot of money, I will buy a house.
③ Nếu chị không được khỏe, chị có thể về sớm.
If you are not feeling well, you can go home early.
④ Nếu anh muốn nghỉ phép, anh phải báo trước 1 tuần.
If you want to take paid leave, you must inform a week in advance.
⑤ Nếu anh không mua được vé máy bay, anh có thể đi tàu.
If you cannot buy a plane ticket, you can go by train.
Giả sử ~ (= Supposing that ~, / Assuming that ~,)

Example Sentences:
① Giả sử tôi trúng vé số thì tôi sẽ làm từ thiện một phần.
Supposing I win the lottery, I will donate a part of it to charity.
② Giả sử tôi có tình cờ gặp bạn gái cũ, tôi sẽ chào hỏi cô ấy.
Supposing I run into my ex-girlfriend, I will say hello to her.
③ Giả sử anh có nhiều tiền thì anh sẽ làm gì?
Supposing you had a lot of money, what would you do?
④ Giả sử hôm nay tôi tan làm sớm, tôi sẽ đi mua sắm.
Supposing I get off work early today, I will go shopping.
⑤ Giả sử anh ấy tỏ tình với tôi thì tôi sẽ đồng ý.
Supposing he confesses his love to me, I will say yes.
