Lesson 68

Grammar 69: Expressions indicating an uncertain/indefinite object (referent)

Lesson 70

Expressions that refer to something without specifying a concrete object, such as “I want to eat something” or “I want to go somewhere,” are essential in everyday conversation. In Vietnamese, you can create these indefinite expressions by adding words like “nào đó” after interrogative words (Gì, Đâu, Khi nào, Tại sao).

Usage 1: “Cái gì đó / Thứ gì đó” – Something

[Explanation] By adding “đó” (that) to “gì” (what), it takes on the meaning of “something” (an object or matter). It is used when the specific name is unknown or there is no need to mention it.

Example Sentences:

① Tôi muốn ăn cái gì đó ngọt.
→ I want to eat something sweet.

② Hình như có cái gì đó sai sai.
→ I feel like something is wrong.

→ Are you looking for something?

Usage 2: “Đâu đó” – Somewhere

[Explanation] This uses “đâu” (where) to indicate an unspecified place. It can refer not only to a physical location but also to an abstract point, such as “somewhere in the story.”

Example Sentences:

→ I left my keys somewhere in the room.

→ Let’s go somewhere for fun this weekend.

③ Tôi đã gặp anh ấy ở đâu đó rồi.
→ I have met him somewhere before.

Usage 3: “Khi nào đó / Lúc nào đó” – Sometime

[Explanation] Used to mean “sometime (in the future)” or “eventually.” It refers to a vague time and is convenient for making suggestions when a specific date hasn’t been set.

Example Sentences:

① Lúc nào đó chúng mình cùng đi cà phê nhé.
→ Let’s go grab a coffee sometime.

→ I will visit you someday.

③ Tôi sẽ kể cho bạn nghe vào một lúc nào đó.
→ I will tell you about it sometime.

Usage 4: “Tại sao đó / Vì lý do nào đó” – For some reason

[Explanation] This carries the nuance of “I don’t know why, but…” or “for some reason.” “Tại sao đó” is used, but in written text, the form “Vì một lý do nào đó” (For a certain reason) is also frequently preferred.

Example Sentences:

→ For some reason, I feel a little sad today.

② Vì lý do nào đó, anh ấy đã không đến dự tiệc.
→ For some reason, he didn’t come to the party.

→ For some reason, my computer broke down. I don’t know why.
