In this lesson, we will introduce expressions using “trong khi” for two simultaneous actions. Let’s learn both how to express an action occurring while another action is in progress, and how to express two long-lasting actions occurring simultaneously!
Sentence Structure: “When / While ~” (Interrupted Actions)
Context: Another action occurs suddenly while one action is in progress.
Structure:
* The action that occurs suddenly is placed in the position of Full Sentence ①.
Example Sentences:
① Điện thoại reo trong khi tôi đang ngủ.
The phone rang while I was sleeping.
② Chị Mai gặp chị Lan trong khi chị Mai đang đi mua sắm.
Mai ran into Lan while Mai was shopping.
③ Tối qua, anh ấy suýt bị tông xe trong khi anh ấy đang đi dạo.
Last night, he was almost hit by a car while he was taking a walk.
④ Hôm qua, anh John đến nhà chơi trong khi tôi đang ăn tối.
Yesterday, Mr. John came to visit while I was having dinner.
⑤ Trời bỗng nhiên mưa trong khi trận đấu đang diễn ra.
It suddenly rained while the match was taking place.
Sentence Structure: “While / During ~” (Parallel Actions)
Context: Two long-lasting actions are progressing simultaneously.
Structure:
Example Sentences:
① Tôi rửa xe trong khi vợ tôi nấu ăn.
I wash the car while my wife cooks.
② Chồng tôi đi nhậu với bạn trong khi tôi chăm con ở nhà.
My husband goes out drinking with his friends while I take care of the children at home.
③ Chị ấy vẫn lái xe trong khi chị ấy không được khỏe.
She still drives even when she is not feeling well.
④ Hằng ngày, anh ấy thường đọc báo trong khi ăn sáng.
Every day, he often reads the newspaper while eating breakfast.
⑤ Mọi người không nên sử dụng điện thoại trong khi lái xe.
People should not use their phones while driving.
