Grammar 31: Expressions of Position / Location

In this lesson, we will learn how to express location in Vietnamese.

Vietnamese has several prepositions to express location, and they are used in a way similar to English.

List of Words Expressing Location

Subject + ở + Location Word + Complement

* ở = (Verb) to be located / to be at / to be in

Subject + ở đâu?

① Nhà của Mai ở bên cạnh công ty A.
　　Mai’s house is next to Company A.

② Công ty A ở giữa nhà của Mai và công ty B.
　　Company A is between Mai’s house and Company B.

③ Nhà của Lan ở đối diện bãi đỗ xe.
　　Lan’s house is opposite the parking lot.

④ Bãi đỗ xe ở bên phải tòa nhà màu đỏ.
　　The parking lot is to the right of the red building.

⑤ Khách sạn ở gần nhà của Lan.
　　The hotel is near Lan’s house.

⑦ A: Bình hoa ở đâu?
Where is the vase?
　 B: Bình hoa ở trên bàn.
　The vase is on the table.

⑧ A: Con mèo ở đâu?
Where is the cat?
B: Con mèo ở dưới bàn.
　　 The cat is under the table.

⑨ A: Cái ghế ở đâu?
　　　Where are the chairs?
B: Cái ghế ở xung quanh cái bàn.
　　 The chairs are around the table.

⑩ A: Cái ly ở đâu?
Where is the glass?
B: Cái ly ở sau bình hoa.
　 The glass is behind the vase.
