Grammar 50: Expressions Emphasizing Degree

In Lesson 44, we introduced emphatic expressions where adding words before nouns and verbs conveys the speaker’s feelings.
In this lesson, we will learn expressions that emphasize the intensity of a situation, especially those that lead to unexpected or negative results.

Usage ① “đến mức/ tới mức mà” = To the point that…

[Situation/Degree]  +  đến mức / tới mức (mà)+  [Unexpected Result]

【Explanation】 “〜đến mức / tới mức” means “to the extent that…” or “to the point that…”. It is used to express an extreme degree that leads to an unexpected result.

Example Sentences:

①Trời nóng đến mức tôi không muốn ra khỏi nhà.
   It is so hot to the point that I don’t want to leave the house.

②Cô ấy mệt tới mức mà ngủ gục trên bàn.
   She was tired to the point that she fell asleep on the desk.

③Anh ta tức giận đến mức mặt đỏ bừng lên.
 He was so angry that his face turned bright red.

Usage ② “quá 〜 đến nỗi mà” = So… that…

Subject (+ Verb)  +  quá + [Adjective/Adverb]  +  đến nỗi (mà)+  Result

【Explanation】 “quá” means “too/so…”, and “〜đến nỗi mà〜” introduces the consequence (“…that…”). This structure is often followed by a negative or surprising result.
* Note: “mà” is often omitted in casual conversation.

④Bài thi này quá khó đến nỗi mà học sinh giỏi cũng không làm được.
 This exam was so difficult that even excellent students couldn’t do it.

⑤Anh ấy chạy quá nhanh đến nỗi mà tôi không thể đuổi kịp.
 He ran so fast that I couldn’t catch up.

⑥Cô bé khóc quá nhiều đến nỗi mà mắt sưng lên.
 The little girl cried so much that her eyes swelled up.

【Explanation】 “thậm chí” means “even”. It is used to emphasize a surprising fact or a situation that exceeds expectations.

Example Sentences:

⑦Chuyện đó thậm chí trẻ con cũng biết mà.
 Even children know about that.

⑧Anh ấy giận dữ, thậm chí đập vỡ cả điện thoại.
 He was furious, he even smashed his phone.

⑨Cô ấy nghèo đến mức thậm chí không có tiền ăn cơm.
 She was so poor that she didn’t even have money for food.
