In Lesson 22, we introduced the basic cause and effect expressions “vì ~ nên”. In this lesson, we will introduce more advanced ways to express causes and results. Let’s learn these extended expressions commonly used in daily life!

① Words Expressing Cause

Basic (※Used in daily conversation and casual speech)

vì because / since Vì trời mưa, buổi dã ngoại bị hoãn.
Because it rained, the picnic was postponed.
do due to / because of Do em ấy ốm, nên không đi học hôm nay.
Due to being sick, he didn’t go to school today.
bởi / bởi vì because / as Bởi vì trời nắng quá, chúng tôi đã không ra ngoài.
Because it was too sunny, we didn’t go out.
tại / tại vì because of / due to
(Often for negative reasons)		 Tại trời tối sớm, cho nên chúng tôi về nhà sớm.
Because it got dark early, we went home early.

Advanced Expressions (※Used in writing and formal conversation)

là do the cause is / is due to Sự chậm trễ là do tắc đường.
The delay was due to a traffic jam.
chính vì /
chính bởi		 precisely because Chính vì thiếu thông tin nên dự án bị trễ.
Precisely because of the lack of information, the project was delayed.
có nguyên nhân từ / xuất phát từ originates from / stems from Tình trạng ô nhiễm có nguyên nhân từ rác thải sinh hoạt.
The pollution situation originates from domestic waste.
nhờ / nhờ vào / nhờ có… thanks to / owing to Nhờ có sự giúp đỡ, công việc đã được hoàn thành sớm hơn dự kiến.
Thanks to the help, the work was completed earlier than expected.

② Words Expressing Result

Basic (※Used in daily conversation and casual speech)

nên / cho nên so / therefore Trời mưa cho nên buổi dã ngoại bị hoãn.
It rained, so the picnic was postponed.
vì vậy / vì thế therefore / as a result Đường đông, vì vậy tôi đến muộn.
The traffic was heavy, therefore I arrived late.
do đó / kết quả là consequently / as a result Công việc nhiều, do đó tôi không thể tham gia lễ cưới của bạn.
There was a lot of work, consequently I couldn’t attend your wedding.
mà so / that (connects cause to effect) Do trời mưa mà buổi picnic bị hoãn.
Because it rained, the picnic was postponed.

Advanced Expressions (※Used in writing and formal conversation)

dẫn đến / dẫn tới leads to / results in Thiếu kinh nghiệm dẫn đến sai sót trong công việc.
Lack of experience leads to mistakes at work.
mang lại brings about / yields Sự chăm chỉ mang lại kết quả tốt.
Hard work brings about good results.
tạo ra / tạo nên

creates / makes
(※Positive connotation)

 Chính sách mới tạo ra nhiều cơ hội cho doanh nghiệp.
The new policy creates many opportunities for businesses.
làm cho / khiến makes / causes
(※Often negative connotation)		 Sai sót trong dữ liệu khiến báo cáo bị chậm.
Errors in the data caused the report to be delayed.

③ Summary

In Vietnamese, there are no strictly fixed rules regarding the combinations of “cause and effect” words. The choice and combination of words depend on the following factors:

Content to Emphasize / Degree of Emphasis

  • If you want to emphasize the cause, the word indicating the cause is usually placed first. Conversely, if you want to emphasize the result, the word indicating the result might be placed first.
  • The degree of emphasis can be flexibly adjusted using expressions like chính vì, chính bởi, là do… or dẫn đến, làm cho, khiến….

Context

  • In spoken language, light and flexible expressions like vì, nên, cho nên, vì vậy… are often used.
  • In written language and formal documents, words like do, bởi vì, dẫn tới, gây ra, kết quả là… are preferred.

Flexible Combinations

  • You can combine both cause and result words in one sentence.
  • It is possible to use only the cause word. (*1)
  • It is also possible to use only the result word.

Meaning: Thanks to everyone’s help, the work was completed quickly.
Nhờ có sự giúp đỡ của mọi người mà công việc hoàn thành nhanh.
Nhờ có sự giúp đỡ của mọi người làm cho công việc hoàn thành nhanh.
Do có sự giúp đỡ của mọi người mà công việc hoàn thành nhanh.
Do có sự giúp đỡ của mọi người cho nên công việc hoàn thành nhanh.
Nhờ vào sự giúp đỡ của mọi người nên công việc hoàn thành nhanh.
Nhờ sự giúp đỡ của mọi người mà công việc hoàn thành nhanh.
Nhờ sự giúp đỡ của mọi người, công việc hoàn thành nhanh. (*1)
