The Vietnamese word “mà” is frequently used in daily conversation, but its function and meaning change significantly depending on its position in a sentence. In this lesson, we will introduce the various usages of “mà”.
Usage ① Adversative Conjunction (But / Yet)
Structure:
Similar to the conjunction “nhưng” introduced in Lesson 30, “mà” or “nhưng mà” connects two clauses to express contrast or an unexpected result, meaning “but” or “yet”.
* Note: “nhưng mà” is primarily used in spoken language and should not be used in formal writing.
Example Sentences:
① Đến giờ đi học rồi mà con tôi vẫn chưa dậy.
It’s time to go to school, yet my son still hasn’t woken up.
② Hôm đó tôi đã có hẹn trước nhưng mà tôi sẽ sắp xếp lại để có thể tham dự buổi tiệc.
I already have a prior appointment that day, but I will rearrange it so I can attend the party.

④ Sắp đến Tết rồi mà em vẫn chưa mua sắm gì.
Tet (Lunar New Year) is coming soon, yet I haven’t bought anything.
Usage ② Relative Pronoun (Who / Which / That)
Structure:
As a relative pronoun, “mà” is placed after a noun to introduce a clause that gives more information about that noun.
Example Sentences:
① Người mà đang mặc váy trắng đằng kia là ai vậy?
Who is the person that is wearing the white dress over there?
② Anh có thấy cái hộp hình vuông mà tôi đặt ở trên bàn lúc sáng không?

Tomorrow is the day that I have been looking forward to for a long time; it’s the day my daughter graduates from university.
Usage ③ Sentence-Ending Particle (Emphatic)
Structure:
In casual conversation, “mà” at the end of a sentence is used to assert one’s opinion, remind the listener of an obvious fact (“didn’t you know?”, “I told you”), or express slight reproach.
Example Sentences:
① Mother :Con làm bài tập về nhà chưa?
Have you done your homework?
Child:Con làm xong rồi mà.
I already finished it! (Why are you asking?)
② Hạnh:Tối nay đi xem phim không?
Shall we go see a movie tonight?
Tý: Hôm trước, chúng ta vừa mới xem rồi mà.
But we just watched one the other day, didn’t we?
Hạnh: Ừ thì xem rồi, nhưng tớ vẫn muốn xem lại lẫn nữa.
Yeah we did, but I still want to watch it again.
③ Mi: Cô ấy hát hay quá nhỉ?
She sings so beautifully, doesn’t she?
Bình:Thì cô ấy là ca sĩ mà!
Well, she is a singer, after all!

Why are you using it? This is mine, you know.
⑤ Em đã bảo anh tin em đi. Em nói chỉ có đúng thôi mà.
I told you to trust me. What I say is only the truth.
Usage ④ Conjunction (Friendly Suggestion / Purpose)
