Lesson 64

Grammar 65: Usage distinctions of classifiers

When learning Vietnamese, you might be surprised by the sheer number of words that come before nouns (classifiers), such as “con” or “cái.” Just like how English uses specific measure words (e.g., “a sheet of paper,” “a pair of shoes”), Vietnamese uses specific classifiers depending on the shape and nature of the object. In this lesson, let’s master the usage of the most commonly used classifiers in daily conversation.

① The Two Basic Classifiers: con and cái

First, let’s learn the distinction between the most frequently used categories: “animate” and “inanimate” objects.

① con: Animate beings, animals, and moving things

It is mainly used for animals, but it can also be used for things associated with “movement,” such as certain tools and roads.

Con chó nhà tôi rất hiền.
→ My dog is very gentle.

② Tôi nhìn thấy con mèo đen trên mái nhà.
→ I can see a black cat on the roof.

③ Hãy cẩn thận vì con dao này rất sắc.
→ Please be careful because this knife is very sharp.

Con đường này dẫn ra biển.
→ This road leads to the sea.

② cái: Inanimate objects, physical items, and general things

This is the most versatile classifier, used for inanimate objects without a will of their own, as well as most furniture and tools.

① Đặt cuốn sách lên cái bàn kia nhé.
→ Please put the book on that table.

Cái ghế này bị gãy chân rồi.
→ This chair has a broken leg.

Cái túi của bạn mua ở đâu thế?
→ Where did you buy your bag?

④ Tôi đã để quên cái ví ở nhà.
→ I left my wallet at home.

② Choosing by Shape and Characteristics

Paying attention to the shape of an object (thin, long, flat, etc.) will make your Vietnamese sound much more natural.

Classifier Target Image Examples
chiếc Vehicles, clothing, one item of a pair chiếc xe máy (motorbike)
chiếc nhẫn (ring)
tờ/tấm Paper, thin sheet-like objects tờ giấy (paper)
tờ báo (newspaper)
tờ tiền (banknote/bill)
tấm vé (ticket)
bức Walls, paintings, letters, etc. (flat, wide objects) bức tranh (painting/picture)
bức tường (wall)
bức thư (letter)
cuốn / quyển Books, bound volumes quyển sách (book)
cuốn từ điển (dictionary)

Chiếc nhẫn kim cương này thật lộng lẫy.
→ This diamond ring is very gorgeous.

②Sáng nào bố tôi cũng đọc tờ báo này.
→ My father reads this newspaper every morning.

③Đừng vẽ bẩn lên bức tường trắng.
→ Please don’t draw on the white wall.

④Tôi luôn mang theo cuốn từ điển này bên mình.
→ I always carry this dictionary with me.

③ Expressions for Collections and Sets

These are used when multiple items are gathered to form a “single unit” or set, rather than referring to a standalone item.

① bộ: Sets, collections, or series

Used for matching clothing outfits, furniture sets, movie series, and the like.

① Hôm nay tôi sẽ mặc bộ quần áo mới này đi dự tiệc.
→ Today, I will wear this new outfit (suit/set) to the party.

Bộ phim hôm qua chúng ta xem rất cảm động.
→ The movie we watched yesterday was very touching.

Bộ bàn ghế gỗ này rất đắt tiền.
→ This wooden table and chair set is very expensive.

② đôi: Pairs

Used for things that come in pairs, such as shoes, chopsticks, or eyes.

Đôi giày mới này hơi chật một chút.
→ This new pair of shoes is a little tight.

② Bạn có biết dùng đôi đũa này không?
→ Do you know how to use these chopsticks?

③ Cô ấy có đôi mắt rất đẹp.
→ She has beautiful eyes.

Key Point

Classifiers are important not just for counting “quantities,” but also for indicating a noun as a “specific item” (functioning much like a definite article, i.e., “the”).
Example:
→ “Tôi mua sách.” (I buy books. *General statement)
→ “Tôi mua quyển sách này.” (I am buying this book. *Refers to a specific book)
