Lesson 60

Grammar 61: Onomatopoeia and Mimetic Words

Lesson 62

In Vietnamese, verbs and adjectives can be turned into nouns by placing specific words before them.
In this lesson, we will introduce the differences and proper usage of four important words commonly used for nominalization: “sự”, “cuộc”, “nỗi”, and “niềm”. Mastering these will allow you to express abstract topics and emotions more richly.

① “sự” for Abstract Concepts

Sự + Verbs / Adjectives

“Sự” is the most commonly used word for nominalization, turning actions or states into abstract concepts (matters or things). It is often used in written text and formal spoken language.

Example Sentences:

① Cảm ơn sự hợp tác của các bạn.
→ Thank you for your cooperation.
(hợp tác = to cooperate → sự hợp tác = cooperation)

② Có sự khác biệt lớn giữa hai ý kiến.
→ There is a big difference between the two opinions.
(khác biệt = different → sự khác biệt = difference)

③ Chúng tôi rất ngạc nhiên về sự phát triển của công ty.
→ We are very surprised by the company’s development.

* “sự” is often used for objective events or states that do not involve emotions.

② “cuộc” for Activities, Processes, and Interactions

Cuộc + Verbs

“Cuộc” is used to express activities involving people’s interactions or a series of processes with a clear beginning and end. It is characterized by creating nouns with a dynamic sense, such as “meetings,” “phone calls,” or “life.”

Example Sentences:

Cuộc họp sẽ bắt đầu lúc 9 giờ.
→ The meeting will start at 9 o’clock.
(họp = to meet / gather → cuộc họp = meeting)

② Tôi thích cuộc sống ở Việt Nam.
→ I like life in Vietnam.
(sống = to live → cuộc sống = life)

③ Đây là một cuộc thi quan trọng.
→ This is an important contest (competition).

* While “sự” is static and abstract, “cuộc” carries a dynamic and interactive nuance.

③ “nỗi” for Negative Emotions

Nỗi + Adjectives (Emotions)

“Nỗi” is mainly used to nominalize negative emotions hidden within, such as sadness, suffering, and worry.

Example Sentences:

① Cô ấy không thể quên được nỗi buồn đó.
→ She cannot forget that sadness.

② Tôi hiểu nỗi khổ của anh ấy.
→ I understand his suffering (hardship).

Nỗi nhớ nhà làm tôi khó ngủ.
→ Homesickness makes it hard for me to sleep.

④ “niềm” for Positive Emotions

Niềm + Verbs / Adjectives (Mental states)

“Niềm” is used to nominalize positive emotions or mental states, such as joy, hope, and trust.

Example Sentences:

① Đó là niềm vui lớn nhất của tôi.
→ That is my greatest joy.

② Chúng ta phải giữ niềm hy vọng.
→ We must keep our hope alive.

③ Tôi đặt trọn niềm tin vào bạn.
→ I put my full trust in you.
