Structure:
The Vietnamese word “nữa” is often placed at the end of a sentence for emphasis. Its basic meaning is “more” or “further.”
Developed from this basic meaning, “nữa” has come to be used in a rich and diverse variety of expressions, including time, actions, or negative sentences.
Usage ①: Addition (More / Another)
① Tôi muốn một chai nước nữa.
→ I want another bottle of water.
② Cô ấy mua một cái váy nữa.
→ She is buying one more dress.
③ Anh hãy chờ tôi 5 phút nữa.
→ Please wait for me for another 5 minutes.
*The item or amount to be added is placed before “nữa”.
Usage ②: Repetition of Action (Again / Once more)
① Tôi sẽ đến thăm bạn lần nữa.
→ I will visit you once again.
② Anh ấy lại quên chìa khóa nữa.
→ He forgot his keys again.
③ Nếu sai thì làm lại một lần nữa.
→ If it’s wrong, please redo it one more time.
*In this case, it is often used together with words like “lại” (again), “lần” (time), or “một lần” (one time).
Usage ③: Negative Expressions (Not anymore / No longer)
① Tôi không muốn ăn nữa.
→ I don’t want to eat anymore.
② Cô ấy không khóc nữa.
→ She is not crying anymore.
③ Anh ta không làm việc ở đây nữa.
→ He no longer works here.
④ Tôi không còn tiền nữa.
→ I have no money left anymore.
⑤ Anh ấy không còn là học sinh nữa.
→ He is no longer a student.
*It expresses that a situation or action has stopped and no longer exists.
Usage ④: Future Time Span (…from now / In…)
① Hai ngày nữa, chúng ta sẽ gặp nhau.
→ We will meet in two days (two days from now).
②Đợi một chút nữa, xe buýt sẽ đến.
→ Wait a little bit more, the bus will arrive soon.
*In this case, “nữa” comes immediately after the time word, so it does not necessarily appear at the end of the sentence.
Usage ⑤: Emphasis (Even more / Furthermore)
① Mùa đông này lạnh, mùa đông năm sau sẽ lạnh hơn nữa.
→ This winter is cold, but next winter will be even colder.
② Con trai tôi khi vào trung học sẽ cao hơn nữa.
→ My son will grow even taller when he enters junior high school.
③ Cô ấy đẹp, hiền nữa.
→ She is beautiful, and furthermore, gentle.
*“Nữa” is added for emphasis in comparative sentences (hơn…) or when listing qualities.
