[When] = khi

In Vietnamese, [khi] means [when] or [at the time of].

Khi + Complete Sentence ① + , +  Complete Sentence ②

 *Since the subject is the same in both clauses, it can be omitted.

[Before] = trước khi

By placing [trước] (before) in front of [khi], it means [before doing…].

Trước khi + Complete Sentence ① + , + Complete Sentence ②
or
Complete Sentence ② + trước khi + Complete Sentence ①

 Before going to bed, he usually listens to music.

 *If the subject is the same in both clauses, it can be omitted.

[After] = sau khi

By placing [sau] (after/behind) in front of [khi], it means [after doing…].

Sau khi + Complete Sentence ① + , + Complete Sentence ②

Note: For all of these structures [khi ; trước khi ; sau khi ; trong khi], the conjunction [thì] (then) is sometimes placed between the first and second clauses. Adding [thì] smoothly connects the timeline of the two clauses and adds emphasis to the statement.

Let’s try translating the following sentences with your teacher.

① Khi có thời gian thì tôi hay đến hiệu sách.
② Trước khi đi làm thì anh ấy thường đọc báo.
③ Sau khi gặp khách hàng thì tôi sẽ đi Hà Nội ngay.
