Grammar 45: Expressions of Disregard and Unconditionality

In this lesson, we will introduce how to use the Vietnamese prepositions “bất cứ” and “bất kể”, as well as “bất chấp” and “mặc kệ”.

“bất cứ” or “bất kể” = “Any…”, “No matter…”, “Regardless of…”

Structure ①

“Bất cứ” or “bất kể” + Question Word

* A question word or noun follows “bất cứ” or “bất kể”, and the combination acts as an adverbial phrase in the sentence, meaning “no matter [who/what/where/when]”.

Example Sentences:

① Bất cứ khi nào / bất cứ lúc nào anh có vấn đề gì cứ liên lạc với tôi.
　 Whenever (No matter when) you have any problems, please feel free to contact me.

② Anh Hoàng dù bất cứ ở đâu cũng luôn làm tốt công việc của mình.
　 Mr. Hoang does his job well no matter where he is.

③ Bất cứ ai cũng có thể mua hàng giảm giá này.
　 Anyone (Whoever it is) can buy these sale items.　

④ Bạn cứ thoải mái sử dụng bất cứ cái gì / bất cứ cái nào trên bàn đằng kia nhé.

Please feel free to use anything (any item) on that table over there.

Structure ②

“Bất cứ” or “bất kể” + Noun + nào/gì　

Example Sentences:

⑤ Tôi có thể ăn bất cứ món gì. Bạn hãy gọi món giúp tôi nhé!
　 I can eat any dish. Please order for me!

⑥ Bất cứ điều gì xảy ra thì đó chính là điều nên xảy ra, bạn hãy đón nhận nó một cách tích cực.
　 Whatever happens is meant to happen, so you should accept it positively.

⑦ Bất kể công việc gì, nếu bạn cố gắng hết sức và có niềm đam mê với công việc đó, bạn chắc chắn sẽ thành công.
　 Regardless of the job, if you try your best and have passion for it, you will surely succeed.

“Bất chấp” or “Mặc kệ” = “Despite…”, “In spite of…”, “Ignoring…”

By using “Bất chấp” or “Mặc kệ”, you can express the idea of doing something “despite” a difficult condition or “ignoring” an obstacle.

Structure ③

“Bất chấp” or “mặc kệ” + Noun

Example Sentences:

⑧ Anh ấy bất chấp mạng sống của bản thân mà nhảy vào đống lửa cứu cô ấy.
　 He jumped into the fire to save her, ignoring his own safety (risking his own life).

⑨ Cô ấy đã bật khóc như một đứa trẻ bất chấp ánh mắt của mọi người xung quanh.
　 She cried like a child, ignoring the eyes of the people around her.

⑩ Bất chấp mọi rào cản về ngôn ngữ anh sẽ luôn yêu em.
　 I will always love you, despite all language barriers.

Structure ④

“Bất chấp” or “mặc kệ” + Complete Sentence

Example Sentences:

⑪ Mặc kệ bản thân đang bị sốt , anh Nam vẫn tham gia trận đá bóng chung kết của đội.
　 Nam still participated in the team’s final football match, despite having a fever.

⑫ Bất chấp gia đình và bạn bè cấm cản, cô ấy vẫn muốn kết hôn với anh ấy
　 She still wants to marry him, despite her family and friends forbidding her.
