Just like the sentence-ending particles introduced in Lesson 36, speakers can add emotion to their statements by placing certain words at the very end of a sentence. In this lesson, we will introduce emphatic expressions where words are added before nouns or verbs to emphasize the speaker’s feelings or the degree of the action.
Emphasizing Verbs
Example Sentences:
① Mai: Anh đã gặp và khuyên Nam chưa?
Did you meet Nam and give him some advice?
Minh: Anh đã gặp Nam rồi, nhưng có nói gì thì cậu ấy cũng không nghe.
I met Nam, but no matter what I actually said, he wouldn’t listen.
② Em đừng có mà ăn vụng nhé. Hãy chờ tất cả mọi người cùng ăn.
Don’t you dare sneak food. Let’s wait for everyone to eat together.
Emphasizing the Degree of Adjectives/Verbs
Example Sentences:
③ Mẹ tôi lo lắng đến mất ăn mất ngủ.
My mother is worried to the point of losing sleep and her appetite.
④ Cô ấy bị bạn chọc đến phát cáu.
She was teased by her friends to the point of getting angry.
Emphasizing Nouns
Example Sentences:
⑤ Nhiều công ty tư nhân ở Việt Nam làm việc (ngay) cả thứ bảy.
Many private companies in Vietnam work even on Saturdays.
⑥ (Ngay) cả chị gái của anh ấy cũng không biết việc anh ấy đã có bạn gái rồi.
Even his older sister didn’t know that he already got a girlfriend.
Example Sentences:
⑦ Tôi phải di chuyển đến sân bay ngay bây giờ.
I have to move to the airport right now.
⑧Để kịp tiến độ dự án, tôi phải hoàn thành báo cáo ngay trong ngày hôm nay.
To meet the project schedule, I must complete the report this very day.
Example Sentences:
⑨ Anh đừng nói như thế. Chính tôi là người phải cám ơn anh.
Please don’t say that. I am the one who should thank you.
⑩ Chính những người trẻ là những người quyết định tương lai của đất nước.
It is the youth who are the ones to determine the future of the country.
