Grammar 37: Double Comparatives

When two things change simultaneously, and as the former changes, the latter also changes accordingly, the Vietnamese grammar structure “càng… càng…” is used to express this.

In English, this is equivalent to the expression “the more…, the more…”.
In this lesson, we will introduce the usage of “càng… càng…”.

Structure of “càng… càng…”

Subject + càng + Predicate ① (+ Object / Complement)+ càng + Predicate ② (+ Object / Complement)

Explanation:

+ This expression indicates that as the first element changes, the second element changes along with it, showing a correlation between the two. The patterns of this relationship can be [Increase → Increase], [Decrease → Decrease], or [Increase ↔ Decrease].

Example Sentences:

① Tiếng Việt càng học càng thú vị.
 The more you study Vietnamese, the more interesting it becomes.

② Anh ấy càng uống nhiều bia càng nói nhiều.
 The more beer he drinks, the more he talks.

③ Bài viết này càng đọc càng khó hiểu.
 The more I read this article, the harder it is to understand.

④ Căn hộ càng gần trung tâm càng đắt.
 The closer an apartment is to the city center, the more expensive it is.

⑤ Tôi không hiểu vì sao cô ấy càng ăn nhiều càng ốm.
   I don’t understand why the more she eats, the thinner she gets.

⑥ Để giảm cân, em nên ăn càng ít tinh bột càng tốt.
   To lose weight, the less carbohydrates you eat, the better.

The Expression “Càng ngày càng…”

Similar to the previous expression, when indicating a change over a long period of time, we use “càng ngày càng…”. “Càng ngày càng…” means “day by day” or “more and more.”

Structure:

Subject  +  càng ngày càng  +  Predicate  (+ Object / Complement)

Example Sentences:

⑦ Em ấy càng ngày càng xinh.
 She is becoming prettier day by day.

⑧ Vật giá ở Việt Nam càng ngày càng đắt.
 Prices in Vietnam are getting more and more expensive.

⑨ Chị Yuki càng ngày càng giỏi tiếng Việt.
 Ms. Yuki is getting better at Vietnamese day by day.

⑩ Vì tập thể thao thường xuyên nên ông ấy càng ngày càng khỏe.
 Because he exercises regularly, he is becoming healthier and healthier.
