The Vietnamese word “m\u00e0” is frequently used in daily conversation, but its function and meaning change significantly depending on its position in a sentence. In this lesson, we will introduce the various usages of “m\u00e0”.<\/p>\n

Usage \u2460 Adversative Conjunction (But \/ Yet)<\/span><\/h2>\n

Similar to the conjunction “nh\u01b0ng” introduced in Lesson 30<\/a>, “m\u00e0” or “nh\u01b0ng m\u00e0” connects two clauses to express contrast or an unexpected result, meaning “but” or “yet”.
\n* Note: “nh\u01b0ng m\u00e0” is primarily used in spoken language and should not be used in formal writing.<\/p>\n

As a relative pronoun, “m\u00e0” is placed after a noun to introduce a clause that gives more information about that noun.<\/p>\n

In casual conversation, “m\u00e0” at the end of a sentence is used to assert one’s opinion, remind the listener of an obvious fact (“didn’t you know?”, “I told you”), or express slight reproach.<\/p>\n

Used to convey a suggestion, request, or command in a friendly way, often meaning “just go ahead and use [item] to [verb]”. Note: This usage is casual and should not be used with superiors or elders.<\/p>\n
